Tallaght Garda Station was officially opened in July 1987, beside The Square Shopping Centre. It is the headquarters for the M district, covering Rathfarnham and Tallaght. One hundred and seventy guards work from this station as part of three departments: Uniform, Detectives and Drug Squad. There are 25 Garda vehicles including squad cars, vans, buses and six mountain bicycles which are attached to Community Policing. As well as the usual Garda services provided, the Tallaght Gardai are involved in extensive community projects, like the KEY (Key to Engaging Youth) and JAY (Jobstown Action for Youth) projects which aim to help all young people in the area by organising activities and social outings. There are also 2 Garda minibuses provided to all schools and clubs in the area for trips free of charge.
